This test conveniently and accurately determines male fertility potential in the privacy of the home.

As sperm quality can vary from one sample to the next, this cassette is sufficient for 2 tests so that results can be verified. However, in most instances the two results will be the same.

The Babystart Fertility Test can be used by men to determine if their sperm concentration is below the minimum fertility standard of 20 million/ml established by the World Health Organisation.

When do you use the Female Fertility Test ?

The first morning urine is recommended because it contains the highest levels of F.S.H. Testing at any other time of the day may give false negative test results.

How do you use the Female Fertility Test?

Precautions:

  • Read all instructions carefully before performing the test.
  • Do not use after the expiration date on the foil pouch.
  • Store in a dry place place, do not freeze.
  • Keep out of the reach of children.
  • Do not open the foil pouch until you are ready to begin testing.
  • Do not use if the foil pouch has been opened or damaged.

When to test

The test can be taken at any time during the month and then the second test should be taken 1 week later. We recommend that you test using first morning urine as it contains the most hormone and so will give a more accurate result.

Instructions

  • When ready to urinate remove the test stick from the foil pouch. Discard the foil packet.
  • Remove the protective pink cap from the test stick to expose the absorbent tip. Do not throw the cap away.
  • Hold the test stick by the thumb grip with the exposed absorbent tip pointing downwards and place directly into the urine stream for at least 10 seconds, until it is thoroughly wet. Do not urinate on the control or result window. If you prefer you may urinate into a clean cup then immerse the absorbent tip into the urine for 10-15 seconds.
  • Remove the test from the urine stream and replace the protective cap over the wet absorbent tip.
  • Lay the test stick on a clean, even surface with the viewing windows facing upwards, while you wait for the result. You may notice a pink colour moving across the windows as the test begins to work.
  • Wait three minutes before reading the result.
  • A pink/purple line should form in the small square window, this is the control window and indicates that the test is complete and working properly. If a line does not appear in the control window, the test is invalid.

Results

Do not read the results after 10 minutes.

Positive

A pink/purple line in the circular window (test window) whose colour intensity is of equal or greater colour intensity (darker) than the line in the square window (control).

Negative

If only one coloured line appears in the square window (control) the result is negative. If a second band (the test band) appears below the first line, which is lighter than the first line, then the result is also negative.

Invalid

If no coloured lines appear in either window or a line appears in the test window but not the control band then the test is invalid and you should repeat using a new test.

What should I do with my results?

If the test result is positive, repeat the test one week later using the second dipstick to confirm the result. F.S.H. elevates for short periods in normal cycles but it is the extended elevation of F.S.H., which could indicate pre-menopausal state. If the second test is also positive you should make an appointment to visit your doctor.

A positive result means that F.S.H. levels are high, this can be an indicator of a pre-menopausal state and if symptoms such as irregular periods, hot flushes, mood swings, insomnia and fatigue exist, you should discuss your results and symptoms with your doctor.

A Negative Test result indicates that your F.S.H. levels are not raised. However, if you do have irregular periods or any menopause-like symptoms we still recommend you see your doctor.

What is Infertility?

If you cannot conceive at all, this is called primary infertility. Secondary infertility is when you’ve had one or more babies in the past but can’t conceive again, or if you’ve had one or more miscarriages or stillborn babies.

Getting pregnant takes longer than many people think. Most couples who have sex regularly without using contraception get pregnant within two years, but each month your chance of getting pregnant is only 20%.

Although there isn’t a cut off point to say when a couple’s infertile, it’s worth seeing your GP if you haven’t conceived after one year of trying. Your GP may be able to check for common causes, and suggest treatments that could help.

Conception happens when a sperm from the man burrows into an egg (ovum) from the woman and fertilises it. This makes an embryo, which settles in the lining of the womb and grows into a baby. The woman releases an egg every month as part of the menstrual cycle. This egg can be fertilised by the man’s sperm during sex, if contraception isn’t used to stop the sperm getting to the egg.
